Water in cylinder?

I have what I suspect to be water in one cylinder on a 1996 Evinrude 90. I have pulled the head and the exhaust cover. The head gasket looked fine but the exhaust gaskets were brittle and one of the bolts had water weeping from around it. I read on another post that I needed to fog the engine to prevent rust in the crank case. How do I do this? Also, are there any other things to look for while I have it apart?

You can fog the engine by spraying the aerosol winter storage oil into the throats of the carbs while turning the engine over with the starter. Now that you have the heads and exhaust covers off: I'd coat the pistons and walls liberally with oil, then rotate the flywheel by hand a few times to work the oil into the rings and cast iron liners. Also, look inside the exhaust cover at the ports. Check the piston rings (rotate crank by hand) to be sure they are not carboned up and stuck on the pistons. They should move somewhat on the piston. Also, the piston skirts should not show any aluminum transfer, nor carbon accumulation. Make sure the bores are clean, perhaps cross-hatched. Look for lines, or gouges in the cylinder walls-There shouldn't be any. Head firing areas should not be pitted.

Thanks for your response. I checked the rings and they move a little. Looking thru the exhaust port at the side of the pistons I see some scratching, is that normal? There is very little wear to the cylinder itself. Should I spray something behind the piston to allow it to get into the powerhead?

Spraying fogging oil through the carb throats is the best way to get to the shiny parts in the crankcase. It's better with the throttle all the way open of course.

I would spray fogging oil or Sea Foam all over and everywhere you can inside the engine asap if you have had water intrusion. VERY cheap insurance. It's only oil and good for it...
