water in cylinder

I have a 1991 140 hp Johnson v4 looper. The rod cap came off durring flushing. Pulled the piston, there was only minor scaring to the crank case, no cracks or breaks. There was no water in the cylinder at this time. I replaced the rod and rod cap, and head gasket. Now, I am getting water into cylinder. Compression is 100 pounds. I don't know what else to check.

I don't know if this is the correct answer so....<br /><br />Did you tighten the head bolts to the right footpounds?

rmelissann,<br /><br />The head bolts should be retorqued after one warm up cycle. Work from the inside bolts, outwards.<br /><br />Did you disturb anything else, such as the exhaust cover gasket?

We only went back to the crank case to put the rod and rod cap on. That is the only thing disturbed. How would I check the exhaust? Is there any other way for the water to get in there? I put the head on a piece of glass and it doesn't seem to be warped. I also cleaned it up real good before putting the headgasket back on.

Why did the rod cap come off? Did the bolts break or back out? Fresh engine? Help us here.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Hooty, <br />The rod bolts backed off. Niether one was broke. When I removed the piston, it seemed to be cleaner than the others. I figure someone who had the motor before me replaced it, but didn't tourque it properly. I don't know much about the history of the motor. I don't know what other information you need.
