getting ready to go on vacation so boat is about ready so i hook up water hose outdrive off just changed oil. i turned water on but didnt get to start engine. then had to go eat turned water off ran for 3 min. so instead of running after wards i thought i would crank motor to circulate new oil instead i get a click. so i know what happened light bulb went on. i remove plugs and crank engine with plugs out and water sprays out of back two cylinders. i pour oil out into cylinders and crank a little as i cant get to crank bolt. will i be okay? vacation next week. will put new spark plugs in and start tomorrow morning when i get new plugs.

Re: newbie mistake

sounds like an exhaust elbow gasket leak.

water leaks down into exhaust chamber in manifold and gets into the combustion chamber through open exhuast valve.

even without the engine running

Re: newbie mistake

If I read that right you had water running for three minutes without engine running and then you tried to start it and it was hydrolocked? If so The water running for that long without engine running I would think it shouldnt have hydrolocked. that water should have just ran out the exhaust. I would pull manifold and look at the gasket for the riser. and check the riser for lots of rust buiod up or a crack. I dont think it should have gotten water in the engine, but others will chime in.

Re: newbie mistake

i dont have time to fix that this year as vacation next week . so water should not get into engine with just water running? Boats are so tough ,have worked on car engines my whole life but boats are a different animal. oil looked new of course and little water that i could tell. boat ran great last year but coupler went out . will i have a chance of it being okay for vacation. will run it in drive way tomorrow and see what happens.will try to find new manifold as this on is pretty old for next year.

i just new something would go wrong ,if it runs all day tommorow i calling it good to go and roll the dice.we dont run it all day long at the lake mostly drift fishing on small lake. might have been 5 minutes actuallywith water on,like that makes a difference.was it my fault or not? manifolds need replaced pretty rust underneath.

Re: newbie mistake

i found this info i hope it will get me thru vacation will carry extra plugs and socket with me.

mercruiser says:

Just because there are streaks of rust on the outside of the manifold does not mean the elbow gasket was leaking toward the inside into the exhaust passage." The water pressure in the water passages of the engine exhaust system that these gaskets seal is lower than the exhaust gas pressure."

so running it will be agood test for that statement:confused:

Just don't think, "This time I'll start the engine first, then turn the water on."
You know what will happen to the impeller.
