Water in gas 115 4 stroke Yamaha

OK, I goofed up an left the gas cap off a buddy’s boat. The good news is that the filler is mounted on the side of the boat (Not flat to the deck and rain) I need to check if there is water in the fuel. Is there a fuel water separator under the hood on this motor? I am going to get a new spin on filter but I have no experience under the hood of this motor.

Mac

hello
yes there is a small water trap. it has a clear plasitc bowl with a small red ring. if the ring floats it indicates water. try to trap the water with a good spin on filter and check/dump it every few hours until your sure no water is present. do not use additives. most are snake oil.
good luck and keep posting

i have found fuel stabilizer will breakdown some water, it basically breaks down the surface tension of the water which makes it easier to move through carbs etc. the trouble is the pickup is usually mounted center and you can get quite a bit of water into a tank that wont pickup until it is directly center/under the pickup. usually a boat doesnt sit exactly square on a trailer even on level ground.
dont rely on the engine filter alone to trap any water, it wont trap much and water has a hard time moving past your carb bowls, fit a water separating filter. good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I just changed out the spin on style fuel filter (Quicksilver) for a Raycor that has a clear bowl on the bottom with a drain for removing water. Ran the boat for 30 min with no visible water in fuel. I’ll go back and look for the water trap.

Mac

If you can put a jack under the trailer and tilt boat to the point of being able to put a pickup in the tank and pump at lowest point, you may find more water in the tank due to condensation than you let in thru the filler. I used to pump out my tank enery year and get out at least a pint,, Gutshot in Raleigh
