I drained the gear assembly on a 55' 7.5 Fleetwin. Light Greyish Sludge came out. What are the steps to correct this? Will I need to remove the power head? If so, is this a good time to replace impellor too? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

ok, lets determine if you really have a leak, when the lube was last changed were new washers installed on the drain, and vent plugs. #1 reason for water in lower unit. if not get new ones, refill, and give it a couple of test runs. then check the lube. don't go tear into it unless you have water again. Yes, it is the ideal time to change the impeller. also a wash out with diesel or kerosene with help get the rest of the sludge out.

I saw no washers at all on the vent plugs! This motor is new to me so I do not know when was the last change... As per the kerosene... Just pour it in to the top and let it sit a while? Please advise. Thanks

yes put the bottom plug in, pour the kero in, put in neutral, and give the prop a couple of spins, to stir it up. let sit 10 mins. drain. you do know that filling with lube is from the bottom plug, dealer and many marine stores carry the washers. leave the top plug out. i like the old way of using the tubes of lube, insert the tube tightly, squeeze till it reaches the top hole, (have the plugs ready and close) put the top plug in, then quickly remove the tube and insert the bottom plug. this makes sure all the cavity is filled.

Sometimes old washers can stick to the lip in the drain and vent holes and are not obviously visable. Take a close look and be sure.

looking good so far... I could use a bit of advice on idle adjustments on the same motor... i had the upper (low spped I think) adjustment feelin pretty good... then I went for the bottom ( hight speed ) adjustment... First it raced and smoked when I turned it left or loosened... finally it stalled and would not restart. I turned it back to the right... opened the choke to get it started and now it is going fast.slow.fast.slow in cycles... Any advice here?

PS. She's in a barrel

That engine can leak water into the gearcae from the driveshaft seal, shift rod bushing O-ring, prop shaft bushing, and seal. plus the O-rinng around the prop shaft bearing head, 6 retaining screws, shift rod clevis screw, plus the drain, and fill screw, So! where is it leaking?

Shoot! I have no Idea! I am systematically rebuilding as priority and finance allow. I think the washers I added to the drain and fill screws did help... Whether they solved it completely or not... remains to be seen Thanks for the info.. I will add these items to my list. List is getting pretty long!

You can't set the high speed in a barrel needs to be on the boat in gear at speed. Initial setting is 1/2 to 3/4 turn out from gently bottomed.Adjust to best setting cheating just slightly toward rich,Not enough to affect operation.

I took it out on the lake and you were right on the money... I am having a litte trouble with the lowest idle speed... I would like to see it a bit lower but she'll stall.. This carb has not been rebuilt or cleaned! I am planning on doing that next on a spare carb I have... will doing that help me at the lowest speed idle) and highest speed (power) much? Thanks, Tom
