OK, so when it rains it pours. Took the boat out for a bit yesterday, boat is new to me but not new. 92 mercruiser 5.0 with Alpha One Gen II. Went out to look some things over and first noticed gear oil coming out of the intake holes. Then I noticed fishing line wrapped behind the prop. Where do I start???

Thanks,
Eric

Time to pop the O/D off, drain the oil, do a pressure test, and remove the prop/fishing line. Just for starters....

Bummer, looks like I am going to learn a bit more about the outdrive today. By the time I am done i think I will have about a brand new boat.

Pressure/vac test it. Only takes one seal leak to destroy stuff. I use my kids old swimmin pool to look for bubbles.

Sorry to hear that you will be spending unecessary money for this issue.... Can't recommend a pressure test strongly enough. It will pinpoint your issue and let you target the repair work accordingly. The seals are often not the only issue. You can replace a good seal just to have an issue with the wear on the shaft it rides on. And, you really need to do a post-maintenance pressure test to check your work. I like the idea of the kiddie pool to immerse the drive. I'll have to try that next time! I might just dunk it in my big pool. Wife just loves the thought of that! (NOT!)
