Hey everyone. I have a 97 70 Johnson and I just checked my gear oil and there is water in it. I am pretty handy with tools so I was wondering if this is a job for me or a mechanic? Any tips? I replace the gear oil every fall so I don know it wasn't there at the beginning of the season. Thanks

The gearcase is sealed.------If boat is not in use there should be no water getting in at all.------Pressure test the gearcase to find the leaks.

You would be shocked at the price of a new lower unit or the repair parts and labor costs.----Time to do something !

Everything still works fine so I thought I should be fixing it before I'm paddling . I was thinking of a lower end seal kit? But I am not sure if I can do the job. I don't have a manual.

Take it to a dlr and have it pressure and vacuum checked. That way you'll know exactly where it's leaking. No guess work !!
