Ok, So my friend has a 4.6L, I think! Mercruiser, alpha drive. He has had water in his reservoir for some time.Explains the oil over flow. Does anyone know what we should do to remove the fluid?? The pump still works it just lifts really slow. How should we drain the fluid, and is there anything that we should rebuild??? He has family coming in town and wants to show them around the gulf, any ideas??

Re: Water in Hydraulic Reservoir

If you mean he has water in the trim system, what needs to be done is the water purged and refilled with proper fluid immedietly.
After that you need to run the pump and see where it's leaking, you may need the trim pump gauges (dealer tool) if the leak is not obvious.
If it's freshwater you might be okay, if it's saltwater he's in big trouble and is going to need a new pump installed as well as both trim cylinders inspected and repaired or replaced.

Ayuh,... My Guess is, that most of his trim system is pretty much Junk, seeing as he's had Saltwater in it for How Long,..??
The Whole System needs to be torn down, the leaks fixed,+ the oil purged...
