water in leg

hi i am trying to find out y water is geting in the bottom part of the leg when i change the gear oil can any one help. on a 20hp 83 evinrude. on my 40hp the oil was a dark grey is that ok.

Milk shake oil is typically caused when lower unit seals are letting water in and turning your oil grey. You probably need an upper seal. The prop seal will drip oil on the floor, if it's bad. These can get chewed up, by fishing line and leak.

Take the g/c to a dlr and have it pressure and vacuum checked. This will take the guess work out of where it's leaking.

The most common cause of water in the gearcase is failure to replace the crush gaskets under the vent and drain plugs every time they are opened.

They are cheap compared to overkill. Check them first.
