Hi, I HAVE A 1981 500/50 4 CYL which has started to misfire in the RPM band 1000 to 4000 on load and then graduley will start to run fine at top end. When I slow again the engin whant to cut out at 1000 " Misfire got worse" Grey sludge on lower cyl plug. Have Seloc manual and all. Merc has type 5 ignition " one coil per cyl " Is it the exhaust plate cracked or the lower bearing seals and o ring??. Have also just replace impeller with new kit.

Re: WATER IN LOWER CYL

This is being discussed in a couple of other current threads, mostly "water in cylinder". Your answer might lie in one of those. They have larger motors, but basically yours is of the same general design.

Re: WATER IN LOWER CYL

I'd suspect the lower seals, followed by the exhaust plate.

-W
