I am new to this working on boats. Could you please explain what and where the quad ring is?

Re: water in lower gear oil

it's a small little special oring.

it goes between the upper and the lower on the starboard side. slightly fwd. of center of the drive. there's a small recess in the lower that will accept this quad ring. w/o this seal. there is no seal between the upper and lower. this is the only passage between the upper and lower. the upper and lower share gear lub through this passage..
