First replace the seals at prop housing. Avoid fishing line, weeds etc. wraping around prop. also there should a seal at the top of the shaft on the lower unit.

Bgillen is right, it is probably just the seals. Anytime you get weeds, or fishing line, or anything tangled into the prop it can tear those rubber seals no problem. If you haven't had experience working with those, or the lower unit, I would buy a repair manual. That way you can learn more about your engine, and at the same time fix your problem. Then you would also have the manual just in case you ever have another problem because a manual normally covers the whole motor.

Also, If the water was housed in the lower unit for an extended period of time, that can cause the parts inside it to become bad. Usually they say not to replace the seals without inspecting the rest of the lower units bearings and seals for water damage. If water is kept in it over the winter, it can actually freeze the lower unit and cause it to crack.

Hi First time on this site and it`s a year later then post date.
I to, have a water problem in the LU! Upon removal of the Unit and Impeller I`ve noticed wear on the vertical drive shaft at the points wear the seals are. Not good, wondering if shaft should be replace expencive! $250 CDN if I can get one. has any one had the same problem & if so can the shaft be dressed down a bit, it`s wore by 40000's of an inch or so, suggest of undersized seals
