A very common reason for water in the LU is that the seals around the fill and vent screws are gone. I don't know where they go, but sometimes they just seem to vanish. Buy new seals and be prepared to replace them everytime you change the LU oil.

Another common cause is old waterpump seals (or at least the seals that come with the waterpump kit). Since the engine is old and it has been sitting around, I would replace the waterpump too.

Both jobs are easy to do.

After you do that, I would fill the LU with new oil and run the boat. Check the LU oil after that for more water.
