Water in my fuel? Look at photo please!

I posted a post last weekend when trying to get my boat going for the 1st time this year here:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=401068

In a nutshell engine (2000 150 HP Johnson Ocean Pro with mixed oil/gas no VRO) started but bogged and eventually stopped running. Had carbs rebuilt last year, and last weekend was reminded to change fuel/water filter. Here is a picture of the contents of the old fuel/water separator after settling for a couple of hours.

I replaced and pumped (via the inline ball) gas into the new filter until the ball was tight then tried to start up the boat. It didn't start. See next post for next pictures please, I want to get this baby running!

I pulled the plugs and checked, relatively new less than 10 hours on them. They looked ok, so I replaced them. Sprayed some carb cleaner in the carbs, let that sit for about an hour while I ran out, and then tried to start again. Black slime began to appear from prop area creating a small slick. That?s when I stopped and came here to post.

I pulled the new fuel water separator and dumped the contents to see what it looked like. Very similar to the one I just replaced. What do I do now, I just added 40 gallons and close to a gallon of oil $$$!

get a bunch of white 5 gallon buckets at the paintstore homedepot etc.Siphon your gas into them, let the water settle and then pour off the gas ,it will float to top,you will need to be sure and get all water out of the tank, you can sop it up with rags, but you only have the hole for the sending unit to work thru.that said,if you think you have a major water problem ,like gallons and gallons, there are companies that can pump the tank filter, clean the tank reinstall fuel. But ,if I were you ,Id try and at least siphon out 5-10 gallons and see what you come up with, you might not be too bad.did you put the boat up full last yr.that helps keep condensation down.often an oring around fill cap breaks and lets water in from rain.Or some butthead may pour something in.Whatever you decide to do,get yourself a few water seperator filters ,and be sure to check alot,as for the engine, you should immediatly drain the carbs and all lines, get clean fuel thru the system and crank it up,use a portable tank if need be.

Based on the photo, is that water in the gas, and which is what? The blue layer obviously has the TCW3 in it, so what is with all the yellow? After looking at the fuel a few hours later, the cloudy yellow is gone, it is just yellow and a small layer of blue on top?
Thanks in advance!
I am thinking of finding someone who has a portable can and hooking it up to see how the engine does on clean fuel. Is that a good idea at this point?

Try the motor on a portable tank and clean gas. If all is then well, dump the other gas and replace.

What is a proper mix of fuel supposed to look like, or can you tell by looking?

I do plan on getting some clean gas from a portable tomorrow, however, I am still interested in knowing the answer to the appearance of the gas I have in my boat.

Thanks again for the help.

that photo isn't water in your fuel, its fuel in your water.

I have a hard time believing theres that much water in your tank.
Water should settle out at the bottom of the glass.
But it looks like 90% water. ?
I had a lot of water in an old 50 gal tank, it was less than 1/2" in the glass.

Draw some of that lower level fluid, dip a rag into it and see if it burns.
You said you put 40 gals of fuel in the tank?

How big is the tank, 500 gals?:D

Put some red food coloring in that jar it will mix with any water but not with the gas or oil.

Petroleum products float on water, so the water will be at the bottom of the tank where the pickup is; the first time you run the motor you pull in all of the water.

If the water makes it to the engine you will need to drain the carburetor float bowls.
