Water in my gear oil (pic included) right seal? How to?

Hey, just changed my gear oil, or at least drained it. I'm guessing this color means water is in there:

So I have to change the seal, that I was told by a shop that line was caught in and caused this leak.

Is this the right seal?

If so, where would it go and is this a DIY job? Is it a tough job? This seal was included when I bought the boat in a small spare parts and tools bag.


I have an 81 Honda 7.5 four stroke.

There is normally two seals, installed back to back. one keeps the oil in, the other keeps the water out, at least that's the way I have seen it on all american made motors.

You will not know where this gearcase is leaking until you do a pressure/vac test.Water entering the gearcase is generally a driveshaft seal but can also be a prop or shiftshaft seal on this unit.Did that that shop do the pressure/vaccume test?

no, the shop was kinda crooked with things. I won't go back there again. But, the guy did say some line was wrapped around the prop and that's where he thought the water was coming in. I was hoping that seal that the line got wedged past was the same as the one in the picture, and easily accessible. Another shop said it will take about an hour to find where the leak is ($92) and another $100 for parts and time putting things back together. Sound right? I'd much rather just do it myself though. Or give it a go on the prop seal, since that's where the line was...around the prop.

Honestly, this is all just rolling through what I think it is. I am really new at this stuff, but not afraid to try this if you guys think it's doable.

so what's the feeling on this? easy fix? still can't find anything on 1 or 2 seals. They are sold as single seals
