water in number 6 cylinder

Ok, I have a 1998 mercruiser 4.3L v6 with a weber 4 barrell carb with Alpha I gen II drives. I discovered the leaking exhuast manifold by noticing surging of 200-400 rpm while running about 2 weeks ago. I checked all plugs after running and found #6 to have water on the plug.

I pulled the manifolds and they looked terrible. I put a hose to the water intake and after only a few seconds water was coming out of the exhaust passage way like a river. I imagine the hole was huge. I ordered new manifolds and installed them. I also changed the oil twice as there was water in the oil.

When I ran the boat two days ago, I was still seeing alot of surging in the rpm's. I pulled the #6 six plug and it was covered in oil. Now I'm thinking water in that cylinder from the leaking manifold really did this cylinder in. I ran a compression check yesterday but it turned out normal. All six cylinders had 180 psi after going through about 6 or 7 compression cycles. Note: I had to run the compression check when the engine was cold (I had just pulled the riser off the new manifold to try to fish old rubber flappers out of y pipe and the gasket was destroyed upon removal). I did open the choke and had the throttles wide open.

What are your thoughts on this? One more thing. Aside from the surging in rpm's, when I ran the boat two days ago, I was getting alot of backfiring from this engine. Two weeks ago when running the boat, the engine wasn't backfiring at all.

Backfiring is usually from a Lean condition.... Surging could be too...
Other than an oily #6, what did the rest of the plugs tell you,..??

The compression test is alittle odd from what you'd expect,...??

When ya had it apart, did you check out the visable valve stems for Rust,..??

Did it Freeze this winter where this barge was parked,..?? for how long,..?? How Cold,..??

Thanks for the reply. When I checked all of the plugs, they all looked normal except #6. I know this doesn't mean much and I will check them again and compare them to some spark plug diagnostic pictures that I have somewhere. I will report back what I see.

When you say "check the visable valve stems for rust" where should I be looking. I'm thinking when the manifolds were off, I should have looked back up into each exhaust passage - looking back up into the block. I'm not real sure about that but I didn't do it - thats for sure.

This boat has been in South Louisiana all winter. It did freeze pretty hard for a few days. Down in the mid to upper 20's. I did drain the manifolds but did not insert anything back up into the exhaust manifold plug to make sure all the water came out and nothing was blocking the plug. The engine has the closed cooling system with 50/50 antifreeze and water in it.

I've had the boat on the trailer for the last 11 months now. It spent 5 months with a mechanic to fix the other motor. I've run the boat just a few times (maybe 5 or 6) in all of the last 11 months. Old gas could be an issue but I've put lots of fresh gas in the boat over the last couple of months.

I'm wondering if I have gummed up carbs. This is an old 25' bertram with fiberglass tanks. Its been only recently that we have put ethanol gas in the boat. I may have issues due to ethanol dissolving the resin of the fiberglass tank. Lots of variables here. Sorry about the long post.
