I replaced the water pump on my 20R69B 1969 Johnson 20hp and when I drained the lower unit oil there was water in it. About a 1/8 cup of water. I can't find the seal . How do I fix the leak?

best way to fix it is to find it…. try and pump some air 15psi and spray soapy water on the gearcase

it may leak on either shafts or the gear shifting shaft or none of the above :)

it may be just in need of changing the oil screw washers top and bottom and proper torquing

if it spent the winter at -20 with water inside you may be sol due to airline cracks in the gearcase :-(

or as some suggest just change the oil mid season if you find a few drops of water.

check with iboats for kits or…

Thanks Crosbyman for your quick response. I will try your suggestions. I am in Arkansas so perhaps 0-10 was as cold as it was exposed to.

Install all new seals.-------The 50 year old seals are done.----Don't forget the o-ring on the shift rod.
