motor had a severe oil leak but was otherwise performing well. I had it on the lake and everything was fine except it sputtered a couple of times. I slowed down for a no wake zone and the engine died. I tried for a couple of hours to get it started. It had been slow to start that morning but I had thought nothing of it. after a tow i got it home and put it on the hose. It started instantly. Then it started blowing brown smoke out the exhaust. i then checked the dipstick and found water in the oil. it looked like chocalate milk. I drained the oil and put fresh in. when i did a compression test all the cylinders were 120-130psi. The boat sat for two weeks but when i started it up again, it fired right up. i let it idle for a couple of minutes and everything seemed fine. the oil looked ok. revved it to 3000 rpm for a minute and the oil started looking milky.then the brown smoke started bellowing out of the exhaust.
the compression test leads me to believe there is nothing wrong with my head gasket. and although i haven't tested the theory further, it seems like it starts fine on the muffs but not in the water. what should i be looking at next.

Re: water in oil, good compression

oil is leaking from a rectangular plate on the starboard side of engine.(the rear one, there are two) and from somwhere behind the engine. perhaps a rear main seal. or a cracked block i guess but i am hoping this isn't the case. i'll look closer this weekend. i find it odd that i ran the boat 2 or 3 times with no evidence of water in the oil. then this. i read a post that interested me about water coming through the exhaust when the wake surges against the transom at a sudden slowing or stop. i was very stern heavy and the engine stall did occur at a no wake zone when i slowed. but then how did it get in the oil pan? it sat for 2 or 3 hours before i started it again but i don't know how much water could leak past the rings in this amount of time. i know it's wishful thinking but i hope that is all that happened. i'll go that route before i start tearing my engine apart. any suggestions on how to identify this as the culprit would be appreciated.

fixed it. replaced the missing water shutter. the water came in through my exhaust and leaked around my piston rings into the oil pan. oil leak was not related. replaced the points that were bad. they were to blame for my loss of spark
