Hi all.

I own a OMC cobra 5.0 outdrive, so i was wondering if the water floats above the OIL or stays on the bottom where cant be seen?

im posting a picture how the oil looks, i believe this thing had the oil in it for a few years now without changing it. My real problem is i saw 1 or 2 very tiny line above oil that looked milky but very small, i want to know some of you experts opinions on this. thanky

Re: Water in OIL inside OUTDRIVE !! Question

The oil looks good IMO. if there was any water in it it could of been from condensation and not necessarily a leaking outdrive. Youll be surprised where water is able to get into. Personally I woudl leave the oil in the drive. Even if you drain it the parts will still have a coating of oil so unless you live in a really really salty enviroment I dont think its gonna rust soon. either way i woudl leave it full of oil. Water is gonna stay in the lowest part of the drive because water is heavier than oil. You can poop the bottom drain plug and see. if there is water in there water will come out first followed by oil. The oil in the drive looks very clear and none of the gear teeth i can see look to have abnormal wear. i think it takes abotu 92 ounces. i may be wrong im sure someone will chime in. i jsut fill it till the dipstick reads full. then I jsut top it off a day or two later giving it some time to work out any trapped air bubbles

Re: Water in OIL inside OUTDRIVE !! Question

awesome great thanks

by the way im making a wood crated to sell it on ebay. here i got some pics
also there's some details that need to be fixed on this drive, needs new Paint, the input shaft is rusty in a part and a screw that has on the side rusty also

How much you think i will be able to sell it for? i need the $ badly, if not i wouldnt be doing all this, jaja. thanks alot

another thing im sure is that the Input shaft rust was caused by the Transom water hose that connects above the inputshaft and it had a tiny drop of water over the time but the water never got inside

alright i will see what happens. The drive is in really good shape just some minor details like the one u see upthere and beside it looks ugly because of the Paint but is all around in good state and is the original paint not sprayed paint or anythings, I can paint this drive and make it look better than new but i will sell it as it is
