BEfore I even ask again for more tech help, I want to say thanks for all the great help in the past. I have an 89 Baja Sunsport with Merc 4.3L and Alpha 1. Recently discovered a leak from when I replaced the tilt trim hose that was leaking. I did not replace the gasket when I put the plate back on the underside of outdrive. The gasket seemes fine. However, two weekends ago, I noticed taking on a little bit of water and just bilged it out until I could get home and find the problem. Thats where I found the leak. Well this past weekend, i was out of town, only to find out my brother had taken my boat to the lake and left it in over night, with the leak. He called me saturday morning and said the water was up to the top of the battery. Said he bilged it all out, then fired boat up. Told him to check the oil. He said it was fine. An hour later he called me back saying that He was running on plane and noticed that the engine seemed to not be at its best. Told him shut it off and check the oil. Said it was milky. So he got it towed in and trailered it. First off, I know I need to change the oil a.s.a.p. My question is what do i do from there? besides replacing that stupid gasket which got me here in the first place... Any way to check and see what is going on without taking the motor apart? Possible to jut change oil a few times and get all water out of motor? Thanks again

Sorry, could not resist.

I am still not sure how the water got in but I will assume that you do and that it is or will be fixed. Yes, changing the oil and filter a few times after running for a few minutes to get the oil warm and circulated is a good thing to do. The engine just may come out of it ok. If the water was up to the starter then I would expect that to have problems very soon. Most important now though is the crankcase like you said.

Absolutely hiding the keys from my brother! Always in for a chuckle, especially in a time like this. He swears up and down he had only been running the motor for about 5 minutes before he heard something that sounded like the motor was flooded, and then he shut it off and called me. I am going to try and change the oil a few times this week and see what comes of it. I hope that there is no internal damages because of this. thanks for the help. I will keep you all updated on this.

Is a good possibility that the water, being in the boat leaked in from the oil pan gasket? That is my only logical assumption right now. I am fairly mechanically inclined and can do most things, minus a complete motor rebuild, Im sure I could do that provided I had access to all of the tools, a GOOD manual, and a decent place to do it.

It's just a guess mind you, but if your oil pan gasket was keeping oil in, it most probably kept water out. I'd suspect the water got a little deeper than your brother wants to admit to..... Just a guess.

What's the lowest point with access to the oil system that doesn't have a seal on it? Dip Stick, Oil Fill?

It was keeping oil in. The only 2 points are dipstick and oil fil cap. THat I know of... I just figured that since water can go places that oil cannot....

This goes without saying but make sure you change the filter with every oil change until all signs of water are gone.................And call Bro and tell him he's in it for the oil and filters.....;);):)
