I HAVE A 1987 3.0L MERCRUSIER MOTOR AFTER THE WINTER I STATED THE MOTOR AND LET IT RUN WITH THE WATER HOSE ie EAR MUFFS.I CHECKED OIL IT WAS NOT MILKY. I WENT TO THE LAKE AND IT GOT HOT REAL QUICK IN LIKE TWO MINUTES. I BROUGHT IT HOME AND IT HAD ONE GALLON OF WATER IN THE OIL PAN WHEN I DRAINED IT. I HAVE CHECKED HEAD IT IS FINE AS WELL AS HEAD GASKET. THERE IS NO OBVIOUS CRACK IN THE BLOCK AND I DRAINED IT BEFORE LAST WINTER. I DID LET WATER GET UP ON THE STARTER BEFORE I DRAINED THE BILGE LAST FALL. ALSO I CHECKED MY IMPELLER AFTER THIS HAPPEN AND IT HAD ONE FIN ON IT. MY QUESTION IS HOW SHOULD I PROCEED COULD THIS WATER COME FROM ANYTHING BESIDES A BUSTED BLOCK ?

Re: WATER IN OIL

Are you sure the head's OK? I think you might've cooked the motor when you had it on the muffs. I had a very similar problem 3 years ago, and found both (V-8) heads warped from heat. Maybe you should do a pressure test.

First things first,(the start of the problem) if you only have 1 fin on the water pump you need to repair it. 2 nd, where did all the other fins go?? Those pieces may have plugged your water passage in the outdrive and that, in combination with poor water flow from a one armed impeller, is why you overheated. Now the bad news, you probably cooked the head(s) when you overheated and/or blew a head gasket (water in the oil). A compression test will probably tell you if the heads or gasket is warped or blown, good place to start. :(

While you are digging around inside the motor, you might look for the rest of the water pump impeller in the water passages. Some of those little suckers are in there and may be blocking the flow.
Be a shame to rebuild the whole thing and have it blow up again!
Good Luck!
