I was just looking at my own pictures and it looks like the wet one is the intake. not the exaust. huh. I have the elbow upside down in the back I filled the water section up and I am waiting to see if the thing is going to leak like that so far I dont see anything. It was pretty rusty and the cast is starting to flake off, but I don't see any water making it over to the exaust side.

did you test the manifold yet?

wouldnt it have been alot easier to fill the riser through the exhaust chamber? thats the big hole

Just pulled the head. The block, gasket, and head are fine. relief!
I talked to a mechanic. he also thinks it is probably the exaust elbow.
I forgot to mention. When I took the distributor out I put it back wrong and had some hellatious backfires. Think that might have anything to do with my troubles?

YES it could be as simple as that. I am interested too as to how the manifold checks out....

not to dissapoint you but the slightest hairline crack is not visible to the naked eye. so dont start jumping for joy just yet.

YES!!!!!!! With the motor so out of time, I can bet you that it "rocked backwards" upon shut down. At that point your exhaust cooling water was drawn into the cylinder with an open exhaust valve. It's called Water Reversion. And what you describe is one DEFINATE way it can happen.
I wish you had included ALL the information in your first post. You probably just tore down a perfectly good engine for nothing.

Your little puddle is on #3 not #4. Even though 4 is about as rusty. I agree it might be the manifold or riser if the gasket looked good. And yes the time can cause alsorts of havic even on autos. sense you have the head off take and have an engine shop magnaflux it to see if it is cracked. That is the best way to find a hairline crack. Good Luck.
