Water in the drive

Took the boat in to get winterized last night. Mechanic called me this morning to tell me I had water in the drive, and now he has to reseal the whole thing. He made it seem like I should have known there was a problem. He aslo asked if there was grease in the bilge. I may be a complete idiot here but I didn't notice anything. This was only my 2nd summer with a boat.
I know what I'm doing with almost anything related land vehicles, but I feel like a complete moron when it comes to knowing this boat. I guess it's a good thing I took it in to get serviced. I was planning to do it myself but with freezing temps in the area I ran out of time.

I guess the question is should I have noticed? And how would I have noticed? Sorry I didn't include the info, I thought I had a signature that had it. I have a 4.3l merc with alpha outdrive. I Can probably recognize when something is wrong with the engine, but further than that I'm a bit in the dark. I know it's a bit vague but anything to look out for, or what should I be doing before and after I take it out for a day on the lake.

I wonder if he said "bilge" - or maybe "bellows"? Bellows would make more sense. And asking if there was water in the bellows would also be a good question.

Regardless, it's probably a good idea to head to the top of the page and do some reading there in the "stickeys." A lot of good basic info.
