Re: water in the spark plugs

You guys are so full off ............. useful information. Checked the flappers, both sides are rotted out, you guys are good. I've never had theese go bad on my car before, boat maintenance is a whole new animal to me. I bought the boat two years ago, it had sat unused for quite awhile, could this cause flapper rottage(170 hours seems like it should be nuttin for a Mercruiser). The inside walls of the manifold and risers look really good, is it common for the flappers to go bad and have very minimal rust elsewhere? Is this an item that should be checked or changed routinely? Thanks for all the help!

The dieseling is probably the main problem. When an engine diesels, it will run backwards a few reolutions just before it quits, this will suck water in past your rotted flappers (not your wife's LOL)

That is because cars don't have 'em.

They don't "Rot" the get destroyed from overheating when people don't replace the raw water pump impeller or the manifolds get plugged up, or run it out of the water without muffs and destroy both the raw water pump and the exhaust flappers and probably the hoses between the Y and the risers.

I really didn't mean that they rotted, like they were made out of apple cores or wood, I gues I meant deteriorated. One flapper was completely missing and the other was half missing, do they normally migrate all the way out of the pipes and outdrive or do I need to retrieve them?

Sometimes they get hung up in the drive or the bellhousing. Here is a picture bondo posted.
The deteriation is from heat as I mentioned earlier.

Are you supposed to use any type of sealant on the manifold or riser gaskets? I really need to buy some repair manuals, is there a certain brand you reccomend or encourage people to stay away from?
