Howdy,

First of all, what engine do you have, and is it an I/O or do you have a "transmission"? Is it a Velvet Drive?

model number, serial numbers help.

It's a mercury model mcm 260 i/o and can't find a serial number and to be honest my first boat so I can't tell you if it's a velvet drive thanks for the reply need anymore info I'll try my best to get it what I can tell you is that after checking the oil which was fine I looked around it some more and found a cap that said transmission fill unscrewed it and found a short dipstick on it and milky colored oil

Ayuh,...If it's an I/O, it don't have a Transmission...
If it's got a Transmission, it Ain't an I/O...
1st thing you've got to do is properly Identify just What you've got...

First off, it's not a Mercury, that's an outboard, you have a Mercruiser.
Since you have a MCM 260, the MCM indicates is an outdrive model, where MIE would indicate a MIE Mercruiser Inboard Engine. and would have a transmission.
There were also some outdrives that had a transmission inside the boat, but were not used on the 79 model 260 engine, which is a Chevy 350 V8.
So for the moment I would assume you have an outdrive as pictured below. Correct?

If that is the case, and you have the 1 drive as pictured, my guess is what you are looking at is the reservoir for gear lube.
Like this. Is this what you have ????????
