I have a 175 hp 1989 Merc/Mariner, it actually says Sea Ray on the outside, it is on a 21' Laguna. After running the motor for a while water seems to collect in the bottom of the inside of the motor, under the plugs, maybe 2-3 cups worth. I would tilt up and it would flow out. I ran it with out the cowl on and couldn't see any water leak. The foam on the cowl is dry. There seems to be a lot of spray on the motor, probably from the depth finder, and when I slow down the "rooster tail" comes up to the motor to get it wet. I don't think any water should get passed the seal on the cowl. Could running it at higher rpm produce a leak that I wouldn't see at lower speeds? <br />The cowl seal was a little mangled so I replaced, and hope that will fix it. Have not tried it since due to the weather, but am taking it into salt water this weekend and wanted to see if I could get any other thoughts/suggestions. Thank you in advance.

Re: Water inside motor

okay i had that problem with mine too.. i have a 35 merc... i would run it and i would notice water collecting in bottom of powerhead cowling.. i took the top piece of the cowling off and ran it and i notice water spraying out from underneath one of the plugs.. it was coming from a piece of the water jacket gasket which holds the water next the the cylinders.. the gasket wasnt put in properly and was misplaced about 1:16 of an inch.. if i was u id check it and see maybe the bolts just need to be tightened.. hope that helps..
