water intake screen disappeared...

Early 90's 60 hp Evinrude. I notice the screens were missing when I went to flush out the motor after boating yesterday. Could they make it through the water pump and to the block? Do I need to tear the whole thing down because they might be clogging the cooling system? Has anyone dealt with this issue before? I'm really happy with the motor other than this...

I've ordered the replacement screens and water pump (it was about time to do the pump anyways). I guess the question is should I run it without them until the new parts come in? This motor is new to me, but it looks like the over heat sensor runs to the power pack, so that means it will drop under 2000 rpms if it starts to overheat right? I need to test the alarm.

Ive seen screens break up before (mine included), but have never seen one plug anything up. Not saying it isn't possible of course. If anything, it may hold the thermostat or pressure relief valve open or something, but that would make it run too cool, not hot.

Thanks for the reply, I tend to over worry... I'm going to replace them when I do the impeller. That motor will cut the RPMs when it over heats right? Isn't that the brown overheat sensor wire that runs to the power pack?

I found a diagram, the brown wire is the overheat sensor, it splits and runs to the power pack and the big red plug.
