I'd go with cutting off the bearing housing.

I heated up the bearing housing with a torch a few times and then gave it a couple taps with a hammer and it finally came loose! I have ordered the new oil retainer rings and the new o-ring, hopefully they will be here soon. Getting the old rings out was slow going without the proper tool, but I slowly worked it out with a hammer and punch and worked in circles. The old housing isn't in great shape but seems like all of the important mating surfaces are ok.

If you have any concerns put a gasket sealant around the mating surfaces before reinstall, dont use silicon. The johnson/evinrude one is good but expensive. I use permatex aviation form a gasket which costs about $8

By the way, that's permatex #3. It comes in a can with a brush in it. Same as OMC gasket sealing compound.

That's a good question and I don't know. I've always used what the manufacture recommended. Maybe somebody else will chime in.

Maybe I've mellowed over the years, but when I was doing this stuff for a living, I took pride and satisfaction in using only genuine OMC parts and recommended sealants. OMC Gasket Sealant it was. You could always tell when some amature had been working on it when you see big globs of blue silicone oozing out, wires re-routed, etc, etc. Just sayin.....

Bought a " parts motor " 94- 9.9 Evinrude.--Had orange sealant leaking out everywhere.------Found that an amatuer had tried to pry the block apart with hidden bolts still in the block.-----Found that the 2 intake manifold gaskets were reversed.----As stated the silicone oozing out is a sign of an outboard " novice " mechanic.

Back to the question at hand, After leaving the outboard shop, I went to work in a hydraulics mfg plant. We used umpteen thousand o-rings every month in applications ranging from zero to 2500 PSI. Not one of them ever got anything other than oil or Vaseline on them. What I'm getting at is that the o-ring on the bearing housing needs nothing other than oil as far as sealing the oil in the gearcase. The only reason for the sealant is to keep water out of the area, which could cause corrosion and pitting of the metal, leading to leakage of the seal. Not rocket science, anything to hopefully keep water out and prevent metal degradation will work.

I agree, less is more. That is one concern I have with using gasket sealent... making sure none oozes out into the inner workings of the gear case. I'll just use a tiny tiny bit.

Well, I got the bearing housing seals and o-ring replaced and the housing and water pump replaced. While I have your attention, can you guys shed some light on to what the 2 small holes and the set screw show with arrows are for?

I had some oil leak out of the small hole just below the upper vent screw. Not sure if the oil leaked out on it's own or when I put the breaking housing back in and it pushed it out, like a pressure relief port?

The set screw locates and holds the pinion bearing in place.----The small holes are casting cavity drains and prevent freeze damage in cold climates.----I have seen these plugged by dirt / sand and even RTV put in there by folks who just do not know.

The set screw holds the pinion bearing and the other two are water drain holes. Don't take the set screw out.
