We have an unusually severe barnacle problem this year in Hyannis, MA on Cape Cod and barnacles formed inside the intake screens, obstructing the water flow and causing the engine to overheat. It was impossible to remove them without breaking the intake screens. While everything is fine now, I wonder about the consequences of broken screens. My worst concern would be large particles getting into the engine but I would think most debris would get chewed up by the impeller, so maybe the only real risk would be damaging the impeller (plan to carry a couple of spares at all times.)
BTW there are 8 intake ports about 1/2 in. in diameter.
I'd like to get through the season without disassembling the stern drive- maybe 3-4 more outings.
I'd appreciate your thoughts. I'm kinda thinking this isn't real critical, but I want to have your thoughts.
Thanks.

Howdy,

It might likely be the other way around. large particles will "chew" up the raw water pump impeller. And you'll be stranded some place you do not want to be.

I would fix it.

Thanks Rick. I can easily change the impeller in 15 mins- even leaning over the transom. As I said, I plan to carry spares...
