Water intrusion in Johnson 80hp LU...What parts do I need to replace?

When I dropped the LU on my '67 Johnson 80hp, I noticed a lot of gear oil slime on the outside of the water pump housing etc. What seal is most likely the cause of this?

I've changed the LU oil twice, so this is an ongoing leak.

Are you actually getting water into the lower unit oil? It almost sounds like unburnt fuel in the exhaust housing collecting on the water pump housing. Does it have a gas smell?

Jeez, I never thought to smell it. It's a gray slime. I'm going to change the LU oil again tomorrow. Not sure if it's normal, but when I tilted the motor up today...the leg drained water out the holes for quite a bit.

I have no idea how much water is supposed to be in the leg.

If you are not getting actual water in the lower unit oil, I would guess that it is unburnt fuel. The lower unit is made to drain the water out, it will drain until empty.

when you change the LU oil what did it look like? did it look clear, black, brown, or like a chocolate milkshake, or creamy?
the LU leaks that I have come across almost always resulted in water in the LU not oil outside it. most were due to the lil plastic washers for the fill and drain screws not having been replaced when the screws were removed... they are a disposable part not intended to be reused. Inside the leg of the motor you will find oil, water, and carbon deposits... they will cover the outside of the water pump housing and slime it up pretty good.

The first LU oil change I did, the oil was creamy off-white. there was a chip in the seam of the gear case and I think the water was getting in thru the hole, so I JB Welded it.

This sounds exactly like unburnt fuel/oil to me. It will completely cover the water pump impeller housing and the top of the lower unit. Completely normal. Can you post a pic of that hole that you JB Welded?
