water keeps getting in gas

a friend of mine has '98 232 baja islander with a 7.4 mpi bravo, he says it is not a mag. this boat has a chronic problem of getting water in the fuel. if he completely drains the fuel tank, within a few trips to the lake, there will be over a gallon of water in the gas tank. There are no leaks in the tank, and the vent tube is secure and not leaking. My question is there any way water can get into the fuel system through the fuel cooler? it looks as though water circulates around the fuel lines from the exploded diagram i've seen. maybe a cracked line in there or something?<br /><br />thanks in advance,<br />scott

Are you sure the fuel tank vent is not getting splash from the hull? Look to see which direction the vent opening is pointing.

he taped up the front 1/2 of that vent thinking that might be the problem, but it didn't help, the other thing is that he had the boat 2 years before he ever started having this problem

check the oring for the fuel fill, I cant see water getting from the fuel cooler back to the fuel tank.<br /> my bet is on water splashing up the vent or leaking past the oring on the fuel fill.

Maybe the boat is too loud for the new neighbors ?<br /> <br />Also the fuel/water separetor should be stopping this.<br /><br />You say the tank is ok,but could the gas gauge sending unit have a bad gasket ?Many boats have plastic tanks.They seem to collect bilge/condensation water around them.<br /><br />How does he know its a gallon in a few trips ?<br /><br />I'm thinking he tanks his truck there,so it's not the gas station doing it.<br /><br />Also thinking we have to know what changed after 2 years.<br /><br />DHP

To my knowledge, Baja has always used aluminum tanks, so the plastic idea is a no go.<br /><br />Water can only get into the tank 3 ways:<br />1. Vent line<br />2. Fill line<br />3. Fuel cooler <br /><br />Locking fill caps are available.That eliminates one source<br /><br />Vent Line...stick a hose into the vent line thruhull and run it up past the windscreen...eliminates that source.<br /><br />Fuel cooler ... it's on the pressurized side of the system, so actually fuel would be going into the water...<br /><br />My take? I think the tank just has a sh!tload of water in it, and he never has drained it and the water overwhelms the seperator.
