i just got my motor running for the first time

and found a small water leak on the exhaust side of the power head. It's leaking under the exhust plate and i can't see it

it's eather comming out the gasket betwwen the power head and drive or the Exhaust plate

can water be leaking between the power head and drive ???

is there a seal that i should have replaced when i did the water pump for the water tube going into the motor??

Chances are it's at the exhaust divider plate as the gaskets on the midsection/powerhead have little to no pressure and the divider plate has full w/pump pressure.

Thanks Laddies.... i only have 2 more weekends to work on it befor i go into the hosp. for back surgery.

so im going to order the water tube seal and both mid sec. gaskets and both ext. gaskets

then next sat, start it and use a mirror to see if i can see it or bring motor up to temp and see if the water is warm or cold like i should have today hindsight is 20/20

Good luck on the back surgery, I am still recovering from it an they won't release me yet, I had a leg the would not work and it's fixed so I am listening careful to the neurosurgeon and they tell me I might be a couple of more months, but I can walk without a cane around the house and can't get out because of the snow. listen to him i was in your shoes and had the S1 , L4-5 fuesed together and now i can walk again now there doing my neck C3-4-5

took 4 months befor i could ride in a boat again after my lower back was done (eazy ride hehe)

it was the gasket between the motor and adp. plate

i ran the motor on the hose for about 15min. motor sounds good and no leaks

now i found a new problem with the lower unit, i think

when i put the boat back in my shop i noticed some mikey stuff comming out the lower unit so i pulled the prop and it was coming out the ext. passage and not the prop seal.

checked the drive oil and it looked new no water

any good ideas for this ???
cracked case ?
cracked bearing carrier ?
o-ring on bearing carrier ?

will try to make some type of pressure tester this weekend to test it.
how much psi should i use ??? 10 - 15lbs

Check the lower unit if the oil is OK then what your seeing is oil that has accumulated in the mid section and the water is simple washing it down.

As a fellow back and neck sufferer which are inoperable I wish you the best on your surgery and a fast recovery. I have the same motor in a 92 model good luck with it. Mine has low compression but starts and runs like a john deere.

just pulled the LU and it's leaking around the o-ring on the water pump houseing.

no oil in the pump but oil was in the water tube to the motor and when the motor was not running it would run back out the
water pickup on LU.

it was a new sierra full pump kit.
going to install a new mercury pump this time then pressure test it .

When you replace the water pump base make sure you have one with the right diameter where the o ring is as there are 2 different diameters

im with ya

it had the right one but my problem with the sierra pump is
the first one i installed... when down tight the ss plate would not go on the two pins pulled it took it back got a new one
installed it and it fit a lot better but not 100%
