Re: Water leak from crack in engine - engine runs well

I've put over an hour on the engine and the oil is still at the same level and color - so I think I got lucky there. However, the water is now gushing out the right side of the engine - it's coming out of the crack at a trickle and coming through about 5 places the top of the engine is bolted to the bottom - is there a gasket there.

If anyone can tell me how to get an image on the site or is willing to accept an e-mail, I'll send you a picture of the engine and the leaks.

Jeff
If you are gushing water out I would stop running the engine and let a mechanic look at it. Either the engine is going to overheat or, if the head gasket is blown, you are going to get water into the cylinders. Get enough water in a cylinder and you are going to bend a rod. Chevys get freeze cracks in the blocks just below the deck surface (about an inch under the head between the two freeze plugs. Sounds like what happened here. They also crack in the valley between the two heads. If it it cracked in the valley you will notice water in the oil. As the engine heats up the crack will open up.

You'll have to pull the head to replace the head gasket, which means removing the intake manifold. You can check the valley for cracks at that point. Once you have the head off you should have it checked for cracks also.

Good luck. If you need an engine let me know :) I build engines for Vesuvio Marine Engines.
