Good morning, I have a question maybe someone can help me out. Getting ready to head up to Sandusky bay for the weekend and fired out the boat like I always do before leaving. I had a small trickle of water coming out of the top spark plug hole, its not from the cylinder its around the water jacket. I tightened up the bolts on the cover not to much and it seams to have stopped. My question is if this thing starts leaking again I won't really know and will it dammage the motor. If we weren't leaving for the weekend I would get a new gasket. I will replace it when we get back. Any thoughts?

Re: Water Leak

Hi,
If it was mine I would run it. I would also check it to make sure it did not become a spray after it was warmed up. If it became worse I would probably park it or idle around depending on how much was coming out. I have seen them run for years like that and some not so long. You could try filling it with silicon for the weekend. A poor temp fix but it may help get through the weekend.

Re: Water Leak

sounds like a classic case of a failed water jacket gasket - easy to do - just undo the bolts ( see warning below) and pull that thin cover off /replace gasket - go fishing .

warning - be prepared to snap off bolt heads on an older motor especially in salt water . also check the cover for bad warping . not changeing that gasket could lead to water being drawn in at high speeds thru the spark plug thread hole and wash the oil off the cylinders .

please -please dont use silicone on the outside as a miracle fix .
