hey guys there is water leaking from one of the covers from my engine, I would go ahead and take it apart but due to the ammount of bolts that is used Iam not sure if I should without knowing what Iam getting into, anyways the pic with the red circle is where the water is leaking out of there is still water coming out of the telltale, but Iam concerened, anyways just wondering what this piece is and if I should replace the gasket right away and if I can cut my own gasket, or if I should buy the proper one thanks again guys.

Never saw a pic like that B4, but, unless performance if affected, I'd leave it alone unless it gets really bad.

BTDT and most of it was a wast of time and money.

Looking at it again, I realize that I'm looking at your exhaust manifold water jacket and cover.

Sorry for the erroneous previous post. If you'll look closely, there are 2 covers with gaskets attached to the block.

The outer one covers up the water jacket; water is under it and over the inner (second) one to cool it.

The inner one separates exhaust gasses (from the engine's exhaust ports) from cooling water that's used to keep the engine from burning up from hot exhaust.

Not a problem to remove both covers and install new gaskets. While you're in there you can see your pistons and rings and inspect for carbon buildup on the side and top of the piston.

If you don't have a Merc dealer handy, you can order things like this from NAPA. They have a marine catalog and I used to buy stuff like this from them all the time.

But, other than seeing/having a leak, there isn't anything there that it'll hurt. BTDT

no worrys, thanks for your help, I'll look into replacing it but I can run the boat like this without to much worry right, there is still good flow coming from the tell tale and everything....

ill bet its leaking because its full of corrosion behind there. id put a new gasket on it but im the kind that likes to tear things apart. if you do take it off. be prepared to put in helicoils. the stainless bolts will come out with the threads in the block.next time you run it put your hand on that cover and see if there are hot spots on it. if there are worry about it, if not dont worry. youll need two gaskets as well and they are both different.

Jay, I would check it for hot spots after it has run a bit. If it uniformly cool, and you are not getting water into the cylinders, see if some Hi-temp silicone sealer will stop the leak. If it has hot spots, or you are getting water, you will need to remove it.

If it has been kept in salt water, removing the bolts will be difficult. Use heat, penetrating oil and an impact driver to try to slowly work them loose. Heat the bolt, and as it cools spray with JB Blaster or something like it, and then use the impact driver to gently try to loosen the bolts. Repeat as necessary. Purchase new gaskets, and if the inner baffle is not corroded through, it may be reused. Check the inner water jacket cover for corrosion holes as well. If that one needs to be replaced, use the same heat-oil-impact procedure, however visit a house of worship before the procedure and pray for devine assistance, as you will likely need it to avoid breaking some bolts.

alright I'll give it a feel next time Iam out and see, I guess I can't use the generic make your own gasket material if it is an exhaust gasket, also how do I know if Iam getting water in my cylinder and if Iam will that be fixed with new gaskets, any idea how much they will cost?

Well, back to the old axiom "If it ain't broke don't fix it". By attempting to stop the leaking you open yourself up for broken off screws, having to drill, tap, and insert helicoils (all of which requres special tools) and then we have the corrosion problem (which you know is there, just how bad is it) with the block and probably both covers...........what a mess.

Maybe you would be better off waiting for it to get bad. You might trade it in for a new one by then and the dealer (with all the tools and parts) can fix it B4 he sells it to someone else. d

The only way you are going to get water in the cylinders is to turn the engine upside down and cram a water hose up it's wazooie.

Jay, You can look up the cost of any part that is available for that motor at www.dougrussell.com. You may be able to find the gaskets at a Sierra parts dealer, for cheaper. To be clear, if you were to use silicone sealer on the water jacket cover and baffle plate, instead of gaskets, it would stand up to the temperature extremes. It may not seal well due to corrosion defects and water pressure. It is recommended, therefore, that you use the gaskets, and a bit of silicone

Well, beins we are blabbing about seals and sealers, I have never found a gasket mfgr to recommend a sealer to be used with his gaskets, but have always had seriously better sealing with said sealants from head gaskets to water pump gaskets.

well today I squeezed a bunch of 4200 in there,and smeared it all around, did 3 coats with the stuff all together, it was a very small leak not much bigger then a pinhole, so if anything will seal it without taking it apart i think my job today will, there were no noticable hot spots on the cover, so in a couple days I will let you guys know how it went, if it still leaks I guess i will tear into it and replace the gaskets, and whatever else I need to...

Shouldn't need to do anything else. Pretty straight forward job if none of the screws break off and the corrosion isn't so bad that the new gasket won't seal.

You know that when you peel off your old gaskets there is a chance, very good chance that a bunch of corrosion is right under them where they touch the alum cover and you are going to have to deal with that to get the new cover's seal to seal.

alright well it appears sealed up and has had a few days to cure, I was going to take it out yesterday to test my new trolling motor, but I forgot the dam key for my boat
anyways I'll be taking it out today and giving it a good run to see if it sealed it very well I gave ut 3 good coats, and then after they cured 2 more coats, so there is alot on there if it is going to hold without new gaskets this will do it!
