I saw a small drip of water coming from the top of my lower unit.

Its a 1976 135hp Evinrude. I bought it about 2 years ago from a friend and he told me he just changed the coils and impeller . So I haven't really messed with the lower unit other than change the lower unit oil.

What is my next step? Should I see if my lower unit needs tighten or should I start tearing it apart?

Put the tools down for a bit. Can you be a bit more specific on where this "leak" is and is it affecting performance?

Its not affecting the motor(not that I can tell). Its a very small slow drip on the right side kind of pass midway toward the back of lower unit between the seal.

Look at the avatar image on the left, the arrow is pointing about where its at.

(on muffs)I did have one moment last week where I rev it up too high and it continue to accelerate and I shut the motor off before it accelerated any more  . Someone told me that happened because of no back pressure.

But I think that the leak was there before that, its barely noticable.

Don't worry about it.. In fact later Model OMC's have a step in the seam so that water can get out freely.

The entire cavity of the lower unit above the gearcase gets partially filled with water. It is perfectly normal for water to leak out along that seam. There is also at least one other drain hole for the water to drain out. Water has to drain out otherwise you northern boaters would be busting engines right and left once freezing weather sets in.

I have a pair of OMC V4s and mine leak there like a sive.
