Water leaking??

Hi all..just got a motor from a friend that I had to rebuild the lower unit. 70hp (1974) Johnson. I got it put back together, new oil seals, bearings, water pump, the hole nine yards. Installed lower unit, filled with oil, didn't do a pressure test cuz I have no means to do one. Anyway, hooked every thing back up, and it started fine, (after sitting in the weather for <br />three years!) Maybe this isn't a problem, but, water IS comming out of the holes in the lower case (fine), a little out of the exhaust relief holes (fine), and looks like a bunch? of water comming out ABOVE the lower unit by the upper exhaust housing. The book I have says, " this model features a "wet sleeve" exhaust system, consisting of an inner and and outer housing with a water chamber in between. The water discharged from the engine cooling system fills the space between the exhaust housings and maintains a specified level when the engine is running" Does this mean water should be coming out at that point? Are you referring to the seam in between the lower unit and the exhaust housing?<br /><br />If so, yes, water will come out there-sometimes.<br /><br />There is no gasket on that seam.

DJ...Thanks for the reply...Yes, as you travel up from the lower unit, at the top of the inner exhaust housing, is where water is coming out of both sides of the outer cover. Does that sound right? Dan

I think so?<br /><br />The "seam" I speak of is the one where the L/U seperates from the exhaust tower.

I've got a 73 50hp and water comes out of the same general area that you show in your photo..on the right side, mostly. I just ignore it..motor runs great and doesn't overheat.

Evin,<br /><br />It should not come out there. If it does, you most likely have a bad powerhead to exhaust tower gasket.

i have same motor as evan and same prob, my answer was replacing head and head cover gasket, water was dribbling out very litely from the bottom. check your spark plugs evan, if they are clean and new, you have same prob

rickdb1boat...actually, just below that, by those two holes (exhaust relief), both sides. I let the motor run about 15-20 minutes in a barrel of water, shut it off, then another 15-20 minutes. Put it in gear, lost half the water in the barrel, filled the barrel again and it did not overheat, or at least the alarm didn't sound. Also, after the test, I removed the lower unit and put two new gromets, one on the shaft by the water pump, and one where the water tube fits, and an "O" ring near the splines. I also drained the oil, and it was "clean". I put that back together today, but did not test. I also put the motor on my boat, I guess the next test will be in the river or lake. Any other Idea's?? Imtrying - I think you are OK. Water will spit out of the exhaust releif in a barrel or on the muffs. A lot more will come out when you are in the water with a bit of rpm.<br /><br />Evin-Newbie - You are asking for an expensive rebuild if you ignor water comming out of the area per rick's photo. That means you have water at the base of the motor under the cowl. If it gets injested into the motor the result is detonation - - as in holes in pistons. I know as I turned my wallet upside down and shook it vigerously last year for the same thing - AKA complete rebuild.

This is Evin-Newbie at work.<br /><br />I want to say it's a little lower than the depiction in the picture...like even with the exhaust, but on the side. I did see a drip from the head area, like one drip of water every 20 seconds or so, so the little bit of water I saw inside the motor cowl is probably from that..I assume replacing the head gasket will fix this. <br /><br />As far as the other water, it was a stream from around the exhaust housing, and it was warm water. If the powerhead/exhaust tower gasket was bad, shouldn't there be tons of water inside of the motor cowl?

I believe so...Its been a couple weeks. Motor runs great with no missing or hesitation. If it is from there, is it as serious? Previous owner thinks its been leaking there forever...

rickdb1boat ....that's the spot!...do I have any thing to worry about? According to others, I either do or don't...quess I'll have to run it around the lake a few times and see...I know, stay close to the dock, and have my trolling motor battery charged up!! Thanks to all....Dan

Ok..just ran motor at high idle for 10 min or so, and water is coming out of that joint in the second picture, on the starboard side, towards the front. Looks to be some oily residue there, as well. <br /><br />I saw a few drops of water inside the cowl on the starboard side as well; I have a very very slow leak on the head gasket. Like a drop every 30 seconds...looks like also that there is a hole for any water that collects inside of the cowl to drain into the part below.<br /><br />Bad news???

Also, checked spark plugs...they were wet, but not water wet..tan color. They did not look 'steam cleaned'.

Houston........We have a problem....After further inspection, and looking at My 70hp Johnson, the water leak I was writing about is NOT leaking where I first reported.....It is NOT leaking up by the exhaust relief (probably a good thing)....it is overflowing, both sides, down lower, by the bracket. If YOU (all that replied) are still out there, is this a cause for concirn? Thanks again....Dan

Relax!! That part's normal to leak when on muffs.
