water on the plugs

I have a 87 classic 50 45 hp 4cyl. 2 stroke had some problems running the motor in idle postion, stalled out runs fine with WOT 5000rpms hits top speed back off in to neutral and it stalls out pulled plugs and found a very small amount of water on the end off my plugs. I changed the gas in the tank, inline fuel fitler and installed new plugs motor idles fine on hose have not been able to test in water yet. My question is how did water get on plugs?

same thing happened on my 88 2 years ago - check the water jacket at the rear of teh motor for any sighns of leaking - run it on muffs and see if you can actually see the water getting sucked in thru the sprakplug threads - teh other spot is the exhaust cover gaskets on the right side ( looking from front ) if yopu dont see the water jacket ( rear ) leaking - change the exhaust cover gaskets first and try - the water jacket bolts tend to break and require drilling out .

Thanks for the input, I ran the boat last night pulled the plugs # 3 & 4 had a good amount of water on the ends of the plug (there gapless plugs) I can't find any water leaking outside the motor at all I spoke to a mercury auth. mech/dealer he hasn't seen the boat in a few seasons but has done some trigger/stator repair in the past for me. From what I've told him he thinks my water jacket is leaking from corrosion and is heading for the junk pile really soon is there any back yard test I can do to see if my waterjacket is really leaking or could it be some gasket. or should I start looking for a new/used motor?

Read verados post,this is what you need to do,exhaust cover gaskets on port side of engine.

i'll second that -even if it is my own post - you could have water leaking by the exhaust cover gaskets - mechanics hate older motors because they just wont quit .
