Hi. I am looking to rebuild my '96 88 SPL due to a broken a ring on #1, missing a section of piston on #3 and have water on the plugs in #'s 2 & 4. Well I've got it completely apart and still have not found definitive cause of the water leak. I only see evidence of water in the port cylinders (rust). The crankcase it's self looks great as do all the bearing journals. As a matter of fact the combustion chambers look steamed cleaned but the piston domes have a layer of carbon same as starboard side and do not look anything like the heads. Additionally I don't detect any warpage using a machinist rule & .004 feeler.
At this point the only place I have not looked is under the water passage cover. I have the OEM service manual and it makes no mention of removing / installing this cover in the power head service section or anywhere else that I can tell. So here's the question...is there a reason OEM left it out such as no serviceability, etc. or is it just an omission? Also, would anyone know is there is visual access under there to anything that might allow me to find my water leak source?
