water pick up

1979 evinrude 140, fine mesh screen that covers water pick up on lower unit is all broke out,is this a critical problem?? or can I run it without the screen and without damaging pump or motor?:confused:

Can you run it? Sure.

Should you run it? Probably not.

Grass & such that normally would get stopped by the screen will now go directly to the pump and possibly get pumped up to the powerhead. We've all seen motors with that screen busted / missing that have run like that for years. We've also seen motors get fried because of that.

Once you have the water pump off you'll have to bust up what's left and drop out the pieces. The new one will pop into place. There's a tab to hold it that's why you have to break up what's left. Then install your new pump assembly (hint, hint) and you're good to go, as far as the water supply goes, for several years. Real simple.
