Water Pressure Gauge?

Installed a WP gauge on my 2002, 50hp 4-stroke Johnson. Barley moves the gauge at idle and only reads about 4 lbs at wot. Have no problems with alarms going off and tee'd in as directed. I know the 4-strokes work more off of volume but think i should be shown more pressure,is there a fitting to remove and tie into direct with the WP gauge?
Tried dropping the engine lower and didn't make any differance.

Thanks, Wayne

Re: Water Pressure Gauge?

First thing you have to do is check that the line is clear from the engine fitting to the gauge - without any kinks, twists, or pressure spots. I think I checked mine three times before I found the little kink/twist that was causing the problem. Also, could be clogged at the engine fitting or anywhere along the way. If this isn't helping, take another piece of tubing (equivalent tubing is available for very cheap anywhere hose and tubing is sold) and connect the gauge directly from the motor to the gauge without running it through wherever the final installation is. This will make sure there's no hidden problems. You can also take the gauge out of the dash and hook it directly to the engine fitting with a short piece of tubing.

As for the readings, there should be a spec for your engine. I found the spec for mine at the teleflex website under tech support. (there's a long list for various engines). For a new-ish engine like yours, I'd think the dealer's shop would have a spec for that. Good luck.

There may be a tiny filter inside the fitting where the pressure line connects to the gauge. I had one stop up once and I removed it with a small pick.

c/6
Hooty
