Water pump 1977 85hp johnson

How deep in water does lower unit need to be in water. I am haveing problems getting registration for for the boat, and scared to take on the water (texas parks and wildlife tough here). I found a bucket big enough to cover water intake, motor purrrs like a kitten. After about two miniutes buzzer goes off, water pump? Or should I wait to get on the lake?<br />One more thing where can I get a good service manuel.<br />Also I want to give thanks this forum I am brand new to boating and have leared tons just reading this forum.

If the water pump has not been serviced do it.You dont want to be out on the lake when it conks out on you! those need done every outher year used or not

Do you know where I can get a good service manual, and to pull the lower unit, do you have to pull the motor off the boat? Thanks for the input, I need all the help I can get.
