I have a 1955 Johnson 5 1/2 hp model CD-12. Runs ok, smokes a LOT. Need to get carb parts. Want to change IMPELLER on water pump while I am at it. I have had lower units off other motors but I cannot find a cover on the CD-12 where I can seperate the coupling on driveshaft. Is this motor set up differently? How do I get tp water pump????

Looking at used parts online I saw a couple of lower units with driveshaft still intact. Do I remove the lower unit with complete driveshaft from power head? Anything up top to disconnect?? I could see the water pump in the picture.

You have to remove the powerhead in order to get at the shift rod disconnect. When you do, you will find a carbon seal assembly at the top end of the drive shaft. That seal is vital and must not be ignored. Always use a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring and make sure the other parts are good. If it leaks you won't notice it right away, but down the road it will throw a rod from water ingestion.

Complete water pump is part number 763758 and is much different than the original, but it fits and works and is better.

Thanks. I'll remove the power head and replace water pump and gaskets/seals up top also.

Got the power head off. Water pump housing good. Ordered an impeller kit which comes with the power head gasket and driveshaft seal?/ "O" ring. Also a carb kit. Will be purring like a kitten soon...Good old motor. Ran good but smoked as the needle vale seats were toast. Will be a real "gem" when I get it going again...Great for the occasional use up north...

Runs but still smokes. New water pump, rebuilt carb. Old float was used. Covered in varnish. Maybe too heavy now??? Not leaking gas or flooding out.

It is supposed to smoke a lot. If you are running it in a container of some sort it will seem much worse than on a boat in the lake.

However if it is running on one cylinder OR the carburetor is set too rich, it will smoke even more.

The float is supposed to be coated with shellac to seal it so it doesn't absorb fuel and sink. Trouble is, ethanol in today's gas will remove the shellac. New replacement floats are made of fuel-proof plastic.

What I'm saying is if it is running properly, smoke in itself is not an issue.
