water pump change 68 merc1000

It was suggested that I change the water pump in my outboard to be safe beens it probably is original.

My question is when they say remove the lower unit to replace it. Is that the section at the very bottom or from the power head down?

The manuals on order but I'm a pretty handy guy if I get the right info.

The lower unit is on the bottom of the engine, held in place by 5 5/8 nuts on the outside and the trim tab must be removed to find a 9/16 nut under it. YOU DEFINITLY NEED A MANUAL. Go to the BAM Marine site for picture in their parts catalogs There was not a 100 HP in 1968 only a 95 or 110 HP

Your motor is a 1968.

1967 was the last year for the 950SS and 1100SS; the 100 HP "1000" was reintroduced (in its final -and probably best- configuration) in 1968 as was the 125 HP "1250". These 2 models carried on into the '69 model year only; they were replaced in '70 with the "1150" & "1350".

BTW it's a bolt not a nut under the trim tab. If you do a query here on "impeller change" or similar you'll find tons of How-To posts on the topic.

Get your parts online at this site or www.boatfix.com lots cheaper than the local dlr. Or you can pick up OEM parts from the Merc dlr as they should stock these commonly-used items; and NAPA carries their own line of parts with Sierra Marine part numbers.

I have a 68 Merc 1000 also and did the impeller this summer right after I bought the boat. It was easy and I had no manual but I have worked on boats so I was not new to it. The anode (trim tab) is held on by an allen head bot. You will need a long 3/8" allen key or a bit. Make sure you are in full foward when you pull the lower unit and do not disturb the selector shaft (on lower unit toward the transom), otherwise, you will have trouble getting foward and reverse. I know this bost is extremely old but i just changed my impeller on this same motor and am having issues with reverse now! actually, its in forward all the time, even in neutral! obviously i messed with the shift rod somehow! What is he best way to get this fixed! Obviously its somewhat simple but please steer me in the right direction!

Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it
stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a
few more degrees CCW until it clicks into a stop, this
should be neutral - check by turning propshaft --
do not shift into reverse unless you turn the propshaft at the same time.
If it is in N go ahead and attach LU to driveshaft housing with control in N.
