Water pump disaster on 4hp Force

Hello.
I have 1986 Force 4hp outboard model 42F6A. I pulled the lower unit to check the water pump because it was not peeing (that I could see) when I ran it at idle in a bucket.

I inadvertently pulled the drive shaft out of the lower gear housing and the gear below fell out of alignment. Through lots of shaking the lower unit, I was able to get the gear to where I could get the shaft back through the gear but now I just have one gear (not sure if it’s forward or reverse) so obviously things have come apart badly.

Anyway, I am resigned to the fact that the lower unit will need to come apart and be correctly re-assembled, but I don’t want to hose that part up too.

Does anyone have the specifics procedure for dis-assembling and re-assembling the lower unit? Also, the procedure for replacing the water pump would be helpful to keep me out of trouble next time! Not finding a lot on YouTube that is helpful.
Thanks!

You are going to need to purchase a repair manual.
Factory is best, possibly on ebay.

Have you got an impeller for the pump?
Found out they are $110 when I sourced one for a co-worker back in March.

I’m finding the same thing with impellers. Not sure what makes them special.
I did however shish kabob the misplaced gear with the drive shaft and it works well.
Now I need to figure out why I can’t idle down without the choke on…

Idle down: choke needed??
Remote tank??
Check the fuel pump diaphragm, then do a starting fluid test, start motor, spray SF around the intake side and see if that makes a difference in the way it runs?
If it makes a difference? then it's sucking air somewhere.

That's what I thought :(
Lots of times the gasket between the carb and intake goes bad or the screws loose.
