Water Pump/exhaust question on 3.5 outboard

I recently replaced the impeller on a 3.5 hp 2 stroke Nissan. I ran the motor in a bucket to test it. Water is discharging from the telltale tube. It also discharges from several places in the lower unit. I pulled the rubber plug that accesses the shift link connection. Water and noisey exhaust came out there, too. Is water supposed to discharge from all these points?

Re: Water Pump/exhaust question on 3.5 outboard

There are a couple of drains near the LU of the NS3.5 that will bleed off spent cooling water. They are intended let the water out to prevent freezing and corrosion damage when the motor is out of the water. They are exposed to exhaust housing pressure, so will typically show some water when running in a small bucket. When submerged in the lake, you'd seldom ever notice... except when you pull the motor out, you will see the water drain out there.

Yes, if you pull the grommet to access the shift linkage coupling you will open up directly into the exhaust housing. Loud, too.

Thanks Paul. I guess if the tell tale is flowing, all is well.
