Water Pump Gaskets - Alpha One

Hey Guys,

I removed the water pump housing last night and noticed that the bottom gasket was previously dressed with some sort of gasket dressing (Perfect Seal, Hylomar, etc.).

My 1st question: Is this a recommended or standard operating procedure?

Also, in the water pump kit there was a white o-ring of some sort that was slightly larger than the oil passage quad seal.

My 2nd question: What the heck is that white o-ring used for?

Here is from the OEM manual, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=387864 no sealer on the gaskets required.
As far as the oring, depends on which kit you got. OEM, Sierra, Mallory, GLM, other. They are not all from the same manufacturer, so who knows.
