So after i replaced my impeller, i put the motor in water and started it up. No water was coming out of the port. So i tore the lower unit off again and found that little grommet, smashed down into the impeller housing. So i can buy one, i only need one, and can get it for 1.30. but its gonna cost an extra 10 dollars in shipping. Is there any chance i can make my own grommet with "Right Stuff" gasket maker?

Was thinking if i sprayed everything down in wd-40, then made a bead of gasket maker around the impeller housing, slid them together pretty carefully, let it sit, it should make the same thing. Right? or should i just bite the bullet and buy the actual grommet?

Im not redneck, i just find it hard to spend more in shipping than the part is worth.

What drive are we talking about? Can't give you a specific answer to a general question.

If it's a gen II you need the correct grommet and instillation tool.

im dealing with the same situation with gaskets for my 56 5.5 johnson, $ 8 gasket, $14 shipping ( napa). hoping to make enough of an order to offset the $14 shipping charge. ( local dealers tell me that they cant get the part)

Re: Water pump Grommet

I was told the same about the dealer not being able to get it, i found an awesome website that has pretty much every part catalogued and blowups of the motor if you would like it?

http://www.marineengine.com

If you go into the parts section, you can select your motor make, year and serial number. It should have the blow aparts under categories, power head, lower unit, etc.

But you have to place a minimum $10 order. But i dont need any other parts right now. So idk what im going to do. But i am going to try to make one first. If it works, then i guess i will have to make one every thime i pull the lower unit off.

Im really surprised your dealer does not have that grommet, it is quite common.

Im not a fan of your plan, but who knows, lol

Just going by what the guy on the phone told me,

But i will go in with the grommet and see, maybe the guy didnt know what he was talking about.

I am not a big fan of it either. Just thought it would be an option.

Given the "importance" of the cooling system, and the PIA factor if you have to do the job again...or worse, $1.30 for the part and the $10- shipping sounds pretty cheap all things considered.
