Water Pump Help. Getting the Impeller over the Key?

Good Morning Gentleman. I'm having a hell of a time with this water pump this morning. For the life of me, I can't get the new impeller over the key. I've "stuck" the flat side of the key against the shaft with a small amount of grease, guided the impeller down over the shaft, and wham-o...the impeller won't go over the key. I've tried:

? sliding the key in place in the impeller down the shaft - no good.
? forcing the impeller over the key with small hammer - won't budge.
? sliding the key in from the top once the impeller is in place - not a chance.

What am I doing wrong? I need to get this thing in there. Any suggestions?

Thanks, achilles.

Make 100% sure you have the right impeller. Clean everything up and check the key and slot for any burs etc. Next position the impeller and find the slot .Next tap the key in last with a blunt flat head screw driver. Then coat it with a thin layer of grease to protect the impeller when its first cranked dry.

Hmmmm, does the key fit in the shaft without the impeller? Does the key fit in the impeller without the shaft? If yes to these 2 the only variable left is the depth of the key. Is it the right key? When the key is bottomed out in the impeller measure the amount protruding and see if you have that depth in the shaft. If so it's gotta go! Good luck, kendo
