Re: Water pump help

If you just put it in there it will be fine. You can turn the shaft clockwise to help as your installing.

The shaft turns the same direction as the flywheel. Just run the impeller "legs" to point opposite the direction of the flywheel.

But wont I have to bend the fingers to get them into the housing? The new one is straight and the old one is curved from rotation. Standing in front of prop the shaft turns clock wise? So the fingers should curve to the left? That would cause the impeller to turn with the curved side turning clock wise also. Is this correct?

It really doesn't matter, when the engine starts the impeller vanes will flip to the proper direction.

Daviet is correct as usual, but I like to get them in right. And yes, you will have to flex the legs to get them into the housing. You can use dish soap to make that a bit easier, but do not use anything on it that will not break down in water.

Re: Water pump help

I always coat the vines and the housing with the slightest amount of soap, but you can do it without it. The whole reason you're changing the impeller is for "pliability" and like has already been said, the tines will change based on direction of the prop. In other words, you could install it with the blades facing for forward, but if the first thing you do is put the motor in reverse, they're going to flip right back the other way. BTW, that's one way to know if it's time to change; if the tines don't spring back to straight (or close) then you need a new impeller.

Ok thanks but I thought the shaft turns same direction at all times. The transmission is in the lower unit correct? Because the transmission linkage goes into lower unit. The shaft goes into the bottom of the engine so shouldn't it be a direct drive? Just curious.

Re: Water pump help

The drive shaft turns whenever the engine is running, so when ever the engine is running the water pump is pumping water. You are correct in that the shifting of gears happens in the lower unit, the drive shaft turns the same direction all the time and the rotation of the prop shaft is decided in the lower unit.
